"The Only IB Continuum School in Bandung!"

Varsity Sport

What are varsity sports?

Varsity sports teams are the principal athletic teams typically representing a college, university, high school, junior high school, or middle school. These teams typically compete against similar teams at corresponding educational institutions.

At BIS, we field varsity-level teams for football, basketball, badminton, cross-country, & swimming for both boys and girls. The varsity-level teams typically consist of secondary-aged players, except in swimming and cross-country, where primary-aged students can earn varsity-team recognition by making a traveling team. However, primary-aged players are eligible to try out for varsity-level team positions, if their skills allow for that.

These players and teams represent the school community and will attend regular training and participate in athletic competitions as BIS Dragons at local or higher levels. The traveling teams for IISSAC competitions have traditionally been considered our "varsity" teams.

In recognition of their high level of performance, athletes on varsity teams are often given varsity letters, which are awards earned for excellence in school activities. A varsity letter signifies that its recipient was a qualified varsity team member, awarded after a certain standard was met.

Our goal is to develop and strengthen our varsity teams so that we are competitive in all sports while maintaining high academic and sportsmanship standards to continue to build a winning and successful athletics program for our community.

Program Overview

Bandung Independent School is happy to be able to offer a range of varsity-level sports for our students. Our programs are dedicated to developing well-rounded student-athletes who excel both on and off the court. We believe in the power of sports to foster personal growth, teamwork, and lifelong fitness habits.

Our school mascot is the DRAGON. Throughout history, dragons have come to symbolize power, strength, wisdom, honor, protection, and change for a variety of cultures. We hope to embody that spirit in our teams and our school community.

For all varsity-level sports programs, students will be expected to undergo a try-out period where our coaches will work to identify and choose players to represent our community at both local and international competitions. Practice and traveling teams will be announced to the community and regular updates on the teams' progress will be shared via the BIS Buzz and social media.

Our school is a member of several athletic organizations, both locally and further afield, including the Java Association of Small International Schools (JASIS) and the Indonesian International Small School Activity Conference (IISSAC). We also compete in local Bandung-area tournaments. JASIS is geared towards Primary-aged students, whereas IISSAC is more geared towards Secondary-aged students. Although, there are IISSAC competitions for primary-aged students in Cross-Country and Swimming.

Expectations

For those players chosen to represent our community, there are a few expectations that they will be expected to adhere to:

  • Players are expected to conduct themselves according to our Vision, Mission, and Values and our school's Code of Conduct. As a member of a varsity team, you are a representative of our school and our community and are expected to participate with sportsmanship and integrity at all times.
  • Players are expected to attend all practices and matches. If players are unable to attend a practice session or a match, they should communicate this with the coaching staff as soon as possible to allow time to find replacements or adjust strategic thinking. If a player is unable to attend practices and matches, they may be replaced on the team.
  • Players are expected to be role models in the community both inside and outside of the classroom. Younger students look up to varsity players and we want to set a good example at all times. This is key to helping us continue to build a successful athletics program, but also to building good people.
  • Players will be expected to travel to and from matches or competitions with the team, excluding extenuating circumstances. As a member of a team, building a sense of camaraderie and trust is vital to success and is something that is built with time and effort.

To ensure safety, BIS employs a required student/teacher ratio of 1 BIS Teacher /Faculty member per 10 kids. This does not include outside coaches, as they are not BIS employees, but rather, outside contractors.

Communication

  • We ask that all communication be respectful and in accordance with what it means to be a BIS Dragon. Remember, we are all working towards the same goal and we all want the very best for our student-athletes.
  • Questions or concerns should be directed to the appropriate person:
  • Coaching staff will deal with all areas of the sport-specific team, i.e.-strategy, line-ups, playing time, etc. Please be aware that at the varsity level, we will try to make sure that every player gets some playing experience, but some situations may arise where not everyone will get as much playing time as they'd like. Decisions about the team will be made by the coaching staff with advisement by the IISSAC Coordinator and AAD.
  • The IISSAC Coordinator will work with the IISSAC organization to coordinate all travel and preparations for that specific tournament. Any questions concerning the IISSAC tournament specifically should be directed to the IISSAC Coordinator. Please do not go to the Activities and Events Secretary with questions about IISSAC or any other competition as she is simply booking things based on the instructions given to her by the Athletics Department. If there is an issue, question, or concern about any of the Varsity teams and or coaches, please contact the IISSAC Coordinator directly.
  • The AAD will be overseeing and coordinating both the ECA program and the Athletics program. The AAD is available to answer any questions or concerns about either, but we ask that you contact the appropriate coordinator first, unless there is a major issue or miscommunication.
