At BIS, we are committed to supporting multilingual learners in their quest to further their facility with the English language. As the language of instruction at BIS, English is pivotal to student success. The system we utilize screens new students upon entry to assess any language needs they may have.
Returning students in need of English language support are tested annually and more frequently as needed. We employ the widely used WIDA test of English aptitude. This assessment analyzes student command over the four domains of language use: reading writing, listening, and speaking. The results of this exam, coupled with teacher input, enable us to responsibly place students according to their needs. For this, we have implemented a three-tiered system.
Tier-one students possess English skills commensurate with the demands of their classes. Such students require no additional support in English beyond the exposure they receive in their subject classes.
Tier-two students are considered proficient, but a dedicated push-in teacher is allocated for them in Humanities and Science to provide additional in-class language support as needed.
Tier-three students attend a dedicated English Language Acquisition class where they receive focused instruction aimed at equipping them with the foundational skills needed to join the MYP English Language and Literature class. Such students also receive the same push-in support afforded to Tier-two students. The BIS English Club ECA runs all year as a support for tier-two students seeking additional directed language instruction.
